You Missed Out On: Culdcept Revolt (3DS)

What a Mad squad!

Rab here, and it makes me really sad that you missed out on Culdcept Revolt on Nintendo 3DS, because it really is one of the best games on that system. It’s a belter.

If you were ever to see me in the wild and try to kill me, by sticking a knife into my right hip pocket area, then it’s likely that my life would be saved by my Nintendo 3DS. And the main reason why it’s in my pocket blocking the knife you killed your family with? Culdcept Revolt.

I’m mad on this game. I’ve heard it described as Monopoly: The Gathering, because it resembles both of those games a little bit. It’s a board game, for sure, with troops that are summonable using cards, and a deck of cards that you build yourself. Being a world-renowned critic of both videogames and board games, you can believe me when I tell you that this is top-end stuff that straddles both those worlds. The board game element is strong and addictive and fair, and the videogame JRPG trappings add a hefty slice of charm.

What do I like best about the game? I like the fact that, on occasion, a battle will require you to build a completely new deck. Your opponent’s spellbook might be weird, or loaded in a certain direction, and only your own deck-building skills will unlock a way through it. Is the bad guy pumping his troops full of big buffs? Bring plenty of spells to break that shit down. Are there a high proportion of fire-aspect troops in his deck? Bring out your big water heavy-hitters and shake him with criticals.

Seriously, this game is fantastic, and you haven’t played it. It’s fun, full of content, gorgeous to look at, and you can even battle your pals. It’s sickening that you haven’t played it.
